Science and technology

Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.

Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries.


Students learn that living things have basic needs, including food and water. They describe what plants and animals need to stay alive and healthy. Students identify the needs of a variety of living things in a range of situations. They will also be learning about seasonal changes in our environment, including the weather. Students describe how people respond to familiar changes in their environment and identify how plants and animals respond to changes.

Year 1 and 2

Students will learn about external features, changes in and growths of living things.

Students will learn to investigate questions and predictions by collecting and recording data, sharing and reflecting on their experiences and comparing what they and others know.

Year 3 and 4

Classes will participate in weekly science lessons taught by Mrs Meredith Irvine.

In Term 1, students will study a unit called Consumer Science.

In Term 2, students will study a unit called Smooth Moves.

During learning experiences, students will be encouraged to appreciate the importance of science and technology in their lives and show a willingness to improve the quality of their local environment. They will begin to initiate their own investigations and develop ideas for design tasks based on their prior science and technology knowledge and experiences. When using the processes of Working Scientifically and Working Technologically, students will begin to develop and apply a sequence of steps to carry out an experiment or design task.
