Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Positive behaviour engaging learning

As part of the PBEL program the school implements the health and personal development program, "Bounce Back" Kindergarten to Year 6. The program is designed to develop positive behaviours through concepts of resilience, self-discipline, responsibility, good judgement and interaction.


Students participate in weekly rotational activities focusing on fundamental movement skills eg: throwing and catching. They will also be learning resilience and social skills through the Bounce Back program. In health, the students are learning about how people grow and change. They will also be studying various aspects of road safety.

Year 3 and 4

The Bounce Back program will also be taught to develop social and emotional skills including resilience. In these lessons, there is a strong focus on circle time, cooperative learning approaches & educational games to build positive relationships, positive emotions and teach social-emotional skills.

In Term 1, students will participate in the units ‘Safe Living', ‘Personal Health Choices' and ‘Core Values'. During lessons, students will identify safe behaviours in a variety of contexts, eg in the water, on the road. They will also learn about sun protection.

In Term 2, students will participate in the units ‘Personal Health Choices', ‘People Bouncing Back' and ‘Courage. Within these lesson they will become aware of the influences on healthy choices, eg television advertising and unhealthy eating, realise the harm that can be caused by drugs, tobacco and alcohol, and learn about other preventative measures to stay safe and healthy.

Over the semester, PE lessons will continue to develop fundamental movement skills in different physical activities, eg playing with a racquet or bat. During school sport on Friday afternoons, students will learn basic game skills and develop their knowledge of the rules of a range of team sports. In Term 2, some activities will prepare students for the cross country carnival and the athletics carnival.

As part of Personal Development the students are encouraged to follow the BHPS expectations which focus on Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best.
