Year 2

English is taught daily and embedded within all Key Learning Areas. In this subject students study how English language is used to create meaning in spoken written and visual texts. 


Students will:

  • Learn a range of strategies to decode unknown words and build on meaning when reading.
  • Develop deep comprehension skills by learning to use the Super Six Strategies.
  • Learn how to navigate non-fiction texts.


Students will:

  • Write non-fiction texts and understand how they are structurally different to imaginative texts.
  • Correctly use punctuation and understand how it enhances meaning.
  • Editing their work on completion.

Speaking and listening

Students will:

  • Present a report on an animal of their choice.
  • Create a Healthy canteen add in small groups
  • Develop active listening skills across all learning situations while developing strategies for speaking confidently and willingly in front of others


Students are grouped according to individual abilities and are given appropriate spelling activities to complete. Visual, morphemic, etymological, phonological spelling strategies and basic spelling rules will be covered.

Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary

Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary will be heavily embedded within reading and writing activities.


Students will be expected to write texts using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style. Correct posture and pencil grip are reinforced.
