Students complete oral and independent reading, comprehension activities, visual literacy, multi-modal activities, novel studies and school magazine activities.
Writing lessons will continue to focus on the structure and language features of persuasive texts, in particular expositions and imaginative texts including narratives.
Students will continue to focus on forming neat, legible cursive writing that flows and joins. Year 5 students should consistently use a pen when writing.
Spelling, grammar and punctuation
The Doorway to Practical Literacy (DIPL) program is used in class on a regular basis, with a spelling, grammar and writing component. Students are learning letter patterns, spelling rules and word families. There is also a focus on correct grammar and punctuation. The focus for each fortnight will be in the homework sheets.
Speaking and listening
Students will be encouraged to develop public speaking skills by preparing and presenting formal and informal speeches across a range of content areas. Active participation in class discussions includes active listening and responding.
